SHORT HISTORY OF MALAYSIA METAL MONEY..
Malay Early Money Before Islam
This earliest form of local currency was made of solid blocks of tin which were minted in the shape of animals and insects, such as crocodiles, elephants, cockerels, tortoises and grasshoppers. These models were believed to be made under the supervision of magicians for use in religious ceremonies. The animal money may have been brought to the Malay Peninsula from Burma or Siam.
Brass Kettle 1800s M

Shell-Backed Ingot
Tortoise-Shell Shaped Curency.
The tin ore was first obtained from newly opened mines, used to be smelted and pourd into moulds to make a pair of ingots shaped like the shell of a tortoise. This practice was associated with casting spells and was a substitute for sacrificing animals. In time, these ingots came to be used as money. The currency denomination of these ingots was based on the amount of tin that could be exchanged for one Spanish silver dollar (8 reales).
